There’s no love at first sight with Bishoftu (ቢሾፍቱ), formerly known as Debre Zeyit (ደብረ ዘይት). But turn off the highway and you’ll find a dishevelled necklace of maars (flat-bottomed, steep-sided volcanic crater lakes) strung around the town, and these make it a favourite playground for frazzled Addis Ababans in search of tranquillity. With some of the best lodging options in the country, Bishoftu is also a great place to spend a few days and recharge the batteries after your epic adventures around the country.
